If you look through magazines or at home decorating websites, you will see a lot about farmhouse kitchens. This is because this type of kitchen is becoming more and more popular even if you do not live on a farm. If this is something you would like to have, below are two tips to help you get started so you can have the kitchen of your dreams.
Choose natural solid wood cabinets for a farmhouse kitchen. You will find many woods used are hardwoods, such as cherry, oak, and maple. Pine is a favorite wood that is used. Pine is a softwood, which means it will get small grooves in it over time. Many people like this, however, as it makes the wood look more worn. Pine also turns a pale yellow over time.
If you want to paint your cabinets, white cabinets are common in a farmhouse kitchen, or you could use a distressed color like green or yellow. Distressed makes the cabinets look old and worn. In most case farmhouse cabinets are either open or have a glass front. This allows you to display your dishes, which should be farmhouse dishes.
You will find that farmhouse cabinets are more traditional with plain trims. For example, you will not find decorative molding with these cabinets. If you would like to add an accent, reclaimed wood works well for this or use decorative glass instead of traditional glass.
Once you have the cabinets installed you need to decide on the type of countertop you want to have. For the color you want something that is neutral and warm. Granite countertops are commonly used with this type of kitchen. Granite is tan in color and has flecks of burgundy, gold, and brown.
Granite countertops are resistant to heat and does not scratch. Granite is also non-porous which makes it more sanitary when compared to other materials. The color of the countertop will never change. Granite is a natural stone so what you choose will be unique as no two granite slabs will ever be the same.
You will also find wood countertops are often used in farmhouse kitchens. Hardwoods are generally used, such as teak, birch, oak, cherry, and maple. You can choose from a variety of finishes or stains to make the countertop look unique. Some options you have include end grain planks, parquet, and butcher block.
Wood countertops are not heat or scratch resistant as with granite. You can put a sealant on the wood to make it more resistant, if you prefer.
